About this tour
Islam reached China by sea and by land within a few decades of the Prophet ﷺ, and the Hui community has been there ever since. The Great Mosque of Xi'an, founded in 742 CE, is the clearest expression of what that produced, a mosque built entirely in Chinese architectural language, with courtyards and timber pavilions in place of domes and minarets.
Xi'an sits at the eastern end of the Silk Road and still has a working Muslim quarter around the mosque. We spend proper time there, alongside the Terracotta Army and the old city walls.
Beijing and Shanghai fill out the picture, the Forbidden City and the Great Wall in the north, and the contrast of Shanghai's waterfront in the east. This tour runs as a private departure, so the pace and the dates are yours.
