About this tour

For several centuries the scholarship that shaped Islamic thought came out of Transoxiana. Imam al-Bukhari, Imam at-Tirmidhi and al-Khwarizmi all came from this ground, and the madrasas of Samarkand and Bukhara were the universities of their age.

Samarkand still carries it in its architecture, the Registan ensemble, the Bibi-Khanym mosque, the Shah-i-Zinda necropolis and the Gur-e-Amir. We also visit the complex at Hartang outside the city where Imam al-Bukhari is buried.

Bukhara is quieter and older, and better preserved as a whole city rather than a set of monuments. The Kalyan minaret has stood since 1127; Genghis Khan is said to have left it alone.
